Covid-19 and Contact Lenses

Do you wear contact lenses? No worries! Our many contact lens patients can breathe a sigh of relief when it comes to their contact lenses and COVID-19.  

According to the CDC, there is nothing to suggest that contact lens users are at higher risk for contracting or spreading COVID-19 than glasses wearers.   We have a video at the bottom you can watch, some expert statements and we will give you strategies recommended to keep contact lens wearers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.   

Since COVID-19, we’ve had lots of questions about contact lens wear at View. Our patients want to know if it’s safe to continue using their contacts during the pandemic.  The CDC reports that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that contact lens wearers are and any higher risk for contacting COVID-19 than glasses wearers. With millions of contact lens users in North America, this is excellent news for everyone! It means that our patients can continue using their contact lenses as usual.   There are several experts such as The Contact Lens Institute, The American Optometric Association as well as the British Contact Lens Association that back up the claim that contact lens wearers will not give you COVID -19 or make you at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19. All agree on another important point as well: Vigilant hand washing and good hygiene practice are a must whether you wear contact lenses or not.

The best things to do to maintain proper contact lens hygiene during covid -19

Practice good hand washing (before, during and after applying a contact lens).

Disinfect contact lenses daily if using monthly contacts.

Dispose of disposable contacts daily.

Discontinue contact lenses if you are sick or are showing any signs of cold or flu-like symptoms
